How we pick F&B classes & top picks
Wet Ink is a weekly new-filings skim for food & beverage — not a full trademark watch. This page explains the class set and the editorial ranking. Not legal advice.
Why these Nice classes
We filter U.S. federal new applications to:
- 029 — meats, dairy, oils, prepared foods
- 030 — coffee, tea, bakery, sauces, sweets
- 031 — fresh produce, plants, agricultural goods (with caveats below)
- 032 — beers, soft drinks, waters, non-alcoholic beverages
- 033 — wines, spirits, alcoholic beverages (except beer)
- 043 — restaurant, café, catering, and related food/drink services
That set matches how CPG founders and brand counsel usually talk about “food & beverage” category noise. We do not cover apparel-only, tech, or general-purpose watches across all classes.
What “top picks” means
Every paid email has two sections in one message:
- Top picks (~12–20) — a scannable editorial skim ranked from that week’s real pull.
- Full week’s F&B filings — every row from the same class-filtered pull.
Ranking heuristics prefer short/medium word marks, newer filing dates, and class diversity. Soft filters on class 043 boost restaurant/café/catering goods language and soft-penalize lodging-only or animal-boarding language; class 031 soft-penalizes obvious pet-food / animal-feed wording. Heuristics are imperfect and can false-positive.
We never invent marks or serials. Public sample pages (e.g. 2026-09-21) use the same curated serials.
Honest limits
- Source is the public USPTO Trademark Search index (MVP). Lag and incomplete fields happen — verify on TSDR.
- Status and goods change after filing. A serial on a sample page is not clearance.
- Class 043 includes lodging and daycare language in the Nice schedule; we try to down-rank lodging-only noise for top picks, but multi-service filings can still surface.
- Class 031 includes pet food and live animals in the schedule; top-pick scoring soft-penalizes those phrases, but the full-week list still shows every class-filtered row.
- Wet Ink does not provide attorney opinions, similarity clearance, or “watch my mark” monitoring.
